3 Days Desert Tour Marrakech to Merzouga Itinerary:
Day 1: Marrakech = Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah = Ouarzazate = Dadés Valley
Your 3-day Marrakech desert tour will start with a pick-up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech at 8 am. You will then drive towards the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka pass, the highest road in Morocco. Along the way, you will see many Berber villages and farms and have the opportunity to stop for photos and coffee breaks.
You will arrive at Ait Benhaddou around noon, have lunch, and visit the famous Kasbah. This is one of the most impressive and well-preserved fortifications in Morocco, dating back to the 11th century. It has been used as a backdrop for many films and shows, such as Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones. You will have time to explore the narrow streets and alleys of the Kasbah and admire the architecture and craftsmanship of the local people.
After visiting Ait Benhaddou, you will continue your journey to Skoura. A charming oasis town with rose gardens and palm trees surrounds it. You will also have a chance to see how the locals live and work in the oasis and learn about their traditions and customs.
Next, you will also have a visit to Rose Valley to experience its natural beauty. At the end of your day, you will be in the Dades Valley, where you will spend the night in a cozy and comfortable hotel. You will enjoy a delicious dinner and a relaxing evening.
Day 2: Dadés Valley = Todra Gorges = Erfoud = Merzouga
After breakfast, you will leave the Dades Valley and head to the Todra Gorge. It is one of the most spectacular sights in Morocco. The gorge is also a narrow canyon with walls that reach up to 300 meters high, and a river that flows through it. So, you will have time to walk along the gorge and admire the natural beauty and the contrast between the green vegetation and the red rocks.
After that, you will drive to Erfoud, a town famous for its fossils and dates. In this city, you will have lunch and visit a fossil workshop. Also, you will see how the ancient marine creatures are transformed into beautiful and unique souvenirs and decorations.
Then, you will arrive at Merzouga in the afternoon. Your camel guide meet you here and you start your camel trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes. This is the highlight of your 3-day Marrakech desert tour, as you will experience the magic and charm of the Sahara Desert. Your camel ride takes about an hour and a half, enjoying the views of the dunes and the sunset. Finally, you will reach your desert camp before dark, where you will have welcome mint tea and snacks.
You will spend the night in a traditional Berber tent. It is equipped with comfortable mattresses, blankets, and pillows. Besides, you will have a delicious dinner and a campfire, where you can listen to Berber music and stories under the starry sky.
Day 3: Merzouga Dunes = Rissani = Ouarzazate = Marrakech
On this third day, you will wake up early in the morning to witness the sunrise over the desert, a sight that you will never forget. Then, you will have breakfast, pack your belongings, and ride your camel back to Merzouga, where you will meet your driver and guide.
After that, you will drive to Rissani. It is the birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty, the current royal family of Morocco. Here, you will visit the local market, where you can see and buy various products, such as spices, fruits, vegetables, handicrafts, and even animals. Besides, you will also visit the Moulay Ali Cherif mausoleum, a sacred place for the Moroccan people.
From here, you will continue your drive to Ouarzazate. In this city, you will have lunch and visit the Taourirt Kasbah, another impressive and historical fortification. Later on, you will have the option to visit the Atlas Studios. It is the largest and most famous film studio in Africa, where many movies and shows have been filmed, such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Jewel of the Nile, and The Gladiator.
